Discover more about Tyrol Cot Heritage Village

Tyrol Cot Heritage Village is a captivating journey into the heart of Barbadian history and culture. Located on Spooners Hill, St. Michael, just outside of Bridgetown, this meticulously preserved estate offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the island's rich heritage. Once the home of Sir Grantley Adams, a pivotal figure in Barbadian and West Indian history, Tyrol Cot stands as a testament to the island's architectural and political evolution. The main house, built in 1854 by William Farnum, is an architectural gem that blends Palladian and tropical vernacular styles. Constructed from cut coral stone, the house features elegant arched doorways, ingenious arched Demerara windows designed for maximum cooling, and high ceilings. The interior is furnished with beautifully crafted Barbadian antiques, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Adams family and the era in which they lived. The hallway features a cupola above, which provides light, and from which a view of Bridgetown could be obtained. Sir Grantley Adams, who resided at Tyrol Cot for over 60 years with his wife, Lady Adams, was a prominent politician and activist. He served as the first Premier of Barbados in 1954 and the first and only Prime Minister of the West Indies Federation in 1958. Their son, J.M.G.M. “Tom” Adams, who was born at Tyrol Cot, followed in his father's footsteps, becoming the second Prime Minister of Barbados in 1976. The house is filled with the Adams' antique furniture, books, antique glass and ceramics and 60 years of memorabilia. After Lady Adams' death in 1990, the Barbados National Trust recognized the historical and architectural significance of Tyrol Cot and launched a campaign to purchase, restore, and maintain the property as a national monument. Today, the four-acre estate has been transformed into a village setting reminiscent of former days in Barbados. The Heritage Village, adjacent to the main house, is a living museum comprised of chattel houses, each representing a different era of Barbadian life. These chattel houses, replicas of traditional Barbadian homes, showcase the island's vernacular architecture and the ingenuity of its people. Inside, visitors can witness traditional craftspeople at work, creating basketry, leather goods, pottery, and other local products. The village also features a blacksmith shop, a replica of a 1920s shingled house furnished in the style of that era, and a replica of an 1820s slave hut, offering a glimpse into the lives of enslaved people in Barbados. The grounds of Tyrol Cot are meticulously maintained, with gardens planted in the style of the 1930s, featuring roses, ferns, bougainvilleas, and other local plants. A traditional rum shop offers visitors the opportunity to sample local fare, such as fishcakes, rum, and sandwiches, while an ice cream shop serves locally made ice cream, jellies, jams, and chocolates. Tyrol Cot Heritage Village is more than just a museum; it is a vibrant cultural center that hosts events, workshops, and performances throughout the year.
