St. John's Parish Church stands as a historic landmark in St. John, Barbados, offering breathtaking views from its location on Hackleton's Cliff, approximately 820 feet above sea level. The vantage point provides unforgettable panoramas of the island's east coast, stretching from Ragged Point to Pico Tenerife.The church's story is one of repeated destruction and unwavering dedication. The original wooden structure, built around 1645, was destroyed by fire. A stone replacement in 1660 was damaged by a hurricane in 1675. Further destruction occurred in 1780, and the 1831 Barbados-Louisiana hurricane completely devastated the church. The present church, completed in 1836, symbolizes perseverance.The church's architecture showcases early Barbadian Gothic style, featuring crenellations, buttresses, and arched windows. The chancel was added later, and stained-glass windows were installed in 1907. Inside, the pulpit is carved from six types of wood, four native to Barbados. Curved staircases flank the entrance, and a Westmacott sculpture pays tribute to Elizabeth Pinder.The churchyard contains notable graves, including that of Ferdinando Paleologus, a descendant of Constantine, the last Christian Emperor of Constantinople. The graveyard also holds the grave of Thomas Hughes, who was buried standing up at his request. St. John's Parish Church also houses one of only two intact sundials in Barbados.
