Situated on the historic Richmond Plantation, approximately 850 feet above sea level, the gardens present a unique blend of natural beauty and curated landscapes. Once a sugar plantation struggling to thrive, the property was transformed in the 1980s into a botanical paradise, opening to the public in December 1983. Spanning 53 acres, the Flower Forest is neither a formal botanical garden nor a rugged nature trail, but a harmonious blend of both. Visitors can wander along paved walkways, shaded by towering Caribbean Royal Palms, and discover a kaleidoscope of colorful flowers, exotic plants, and tranquil vistas. The imaginative landscaping incorporates flora from across the West Indies and other tropical regions, creating a diverse and captivating environment. The gardens offer a sensory feast, with dazzling tropical colors, fragrant blossoms, the songs of native birds, and gentle country breezes. Meandering paths lead to strategically placed lookouts, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the distant eastern coastline. The atmosphere is one of tranquility and relaxation, a welcome respite from the bustling beaches and tourist hotspots.The Flower Forest boasts a diverse collection of flora, including Heliconias, ginger lilies, bromeliads, and anthurium lilies. These flowering plants thrive beneath the canopy of indigenous Caribbean Royal Palms, creating a vibrant and ever-changing display. The gardens are home to a variety of wildlife, including birds, mongoose, and hummingbirds, adding to the natural charm of the location.Over the years, the Flower Forest has undergone several enhancements to improve the visitor experience. In 1990, a new, larger pavilion was constructed, providing expanded space for dining and hosting special events. The gardens themselves were completely rejuvenated in 2009, refreshing the landscapes and facilities. In 2015, a new deck was added, offering spectacular views over the garden. And in 2017, the kitchen was renovated, and handicap-accessible facilities, including bathrooms, were added.
