George Washington House: A Journey into Colonial Barbados

In 1751, a 19-year-old George Washington and his ailing brother Lawrence resided in this stately Georgian-style mansion, then known as Bush Hill House, for two months. This marked Washington's only trip outside of colonial America.The beautifully restored home brings 1750s Barbados to life, showcasing a typical, yet not lavish, plantation residence of the mid-18th century. The ground floor is furnished with period pieces acquired from estate houses across the island, offering a glimpse into the daily life of a wealthy Barbadian family. The second floor houses interactive museum exhibits that delve into the rich cultural heritage of the island during the 17th and 18th centuries. A highlight is the 16-minute docudrama in an air-conditioned cinema about George Washington's visit in 1751.Beneath the Garrison lies a network of tunnels, originally designed for drainage and later used as escape routes for the British troops.
