Discover more about Jubilee Gardens

Jubilee Gardens, a serene city park in the heart of Bridgetown, Barbados, provides a tranquil escape from the city's vibrant energy. Originally developed in 1888 to honor Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, the gardens were envisioned as a green oasis for residents and visitors. Located at the western end of Broad Street, next to St. Mary's Anglican Church, the gardens offered a peaceful atmosphere with lush trees, vibrant floral displays, and comfortable benches. However, in 1929, the area was paved over to create the Lower Green Bus Terminal, a bustling transportation hub. In 2005, as part of an urban renewal project, Jubilee Gardens was reborn. The bus terminal was relocated, and the area was redeveloped as a public square, reclaiming its identity as a green space. The revitalized gardens feature paved grounds, plants in each corner, and an open-air venue for entertainment and exhibitions. Archaeological excavations in the 1990s unearthed cobblestones dating back to the late 17th century, revealing one of the island's first streets. These cobblestones, brought to Barbados as ballast in European trading ships, provide a tangible link to the island's colonial past. Today, Jubilee Gardens hosts musical performances, modeling shows, and outdoor worship services. It stands as a testament to Bridgetown's commitment to providing green spaces for its community.
