Situated on the historic Richmond Plantation, approximately 850 feet above sea level in the parish of St. Joseph, the gardens offer a unique blend of natural beauty and curated landscapes.Once a sugar plantation struggling to thrive, Richmond Plantation was transformed in the 1980s into a botanical paradise, opening to the public in December 1983. The vision was brought to life by Don Hill, with the expertise of Richard Coghlan of Kew Gardens, who meticulously planned the layout. Today, the Flower Forest boasts a diverse collection of flora, including Heliconias, ginger lilies, bromeliads, and anthurium lilies.Visitors can explore the gardens at their own pace, following well-maintained trails and discovering hidden floral treasures. The main trail offers a comprehensive overview of the gardens, while smaller paths lead to more secluded areas. Be sure to stop and admire the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and distant eastern coastline. The gardens also host events and weddings. There is also a gift shop with locally made crafts and a café on site.
