St. James Parish Church: A Timeless Sanctuary

St. James Parish Church, situated in Holetown, St. James, Barbados, is more than just a place of worship; it's a living testament to the island's history and spiritual heritage. As the oldest church in Barbados, its story began with the first English settlers who landed in Holetown in 1627. Recognizing the need for a place of worship, they erected a wooden structure in 1628, marking the beginning of a lasting legacy. Over the centuries, the church has evolved, with a coral stone building replacing the original wooden one in the early 1690s after a devastating hurricane in 1675. The current structure largely dates back to 1874 when the church was rebuilt and expanded, featuring a raised nave roof supported by new pillars and arches. The building was consecrated by Bishop Mitchinson on Easter Tuesday, 1875. Inside, visitors can admire beautiful stained-glass windows, including one commemorating those who died in World War I and another depicting the baptism of the Ethiopian Eunuch. The church also houses a historic bell dating back to 1696, predating the American Liberty Bell. The baptismal font is over 300 years old and bears an inscription from 1684. St. James Parish Church is located next to Folkestone Marine Park on what is known as 'God's Acre'.
