This iconic venue, part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Garrison Historic Area, has been the heart of horse racing in Barbados since 1845. Initially, the Garrison Savannah served as a parade ground for the British Regiment stationed in Barbados. Officers began competing in horse races against wealthy plantation owners, establishing a tradition that evolved into a beloved national pastime. In 1905, the Barbados Turf Club was founded, solidifying the Savannah's role as the premier horse racing venue on the island. The club manages and promotes racing events throughout the year, drawing locals and tourists alike. The Savannah's oval turf course spans six furlongs and hosts races of varying lengths. The Barbados Turf Club organizes three main racing seasons annually: January to April, May to September, and November to December, with approximately 25 race meetings and 185 races held each year. The highlight is the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup, a prestigious international event that attracts thoroughbred owners, jockeys, and trainers from around the world. Beyond horse racing, the Garrison Savannah is a versatile venue. The national Independence Day Parade is held here every November 30th. Every Easter, the Savannah hosts a kite-flying competition. It's also used for rugby and football (soccer) training and games. The surrounding Garrison Historic Area features significant historical buildings, including the Main Guard House and Clock Tower, the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, St. Ann's Fort, and George Washington House.
