Discover more about Grand Place

The Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, stands as the historical heart of Brussels, with its origins dating back to the 12th century. Originally a marketplace, it evolved into the political and social center of the city, hosting markets, festivals, and even public executions. The square's architecture reflects Brussels' wealth and power over different eras. The guildhalls, primarily built in the 17th century after the Great Fire of 1695, showcase Flemish Baroque style with ornate facades and sculptural details. The Brussels' Town Hall, erected between 1401 and 1455, is the only remaining medieval building on the square. Opposite the Town Hall stands the King's House (Maison du Roi), housing the Brussels City Museum. The Grand Place has witnessed numerous historical events, including the burning of Protestant martyrs in 1523 and the bombardment by French troops in 1695. Today, it hosts festive and cultural events, such as the Flower Carpet, the Ommegang, and Christmas Market. The square is a popular meeting spot, attracting tourists, school groups, and locals alike.
