This well-preserved farm complex was the scene of intense fighting and is considered the most emblematic landmark of the battle. The Duke of Wellington himself stated that “the success of the battle turned upon the closing of the gates at Hougoumont”. Originally a medium-sized manor complex, Hougoumont was strategically positioned on the western flank of Wellington's defensive line.
