Discover more about Kravaalbos

The Kravaalbos, a tranquil forest near Aalst, Belgium, offers a refreshing escape into nature. This 80-hectare woodland, located on the border between East Flanders and Flemish Brabant, is a haven for diverse plant and animal life. Once part of the vast Kolenwoud forest, the Kravaalbos boasts a rich history and ecological significance. Historically, the area was known for sandstone quarries, with the name 'Kravaal' derived from 'steenvallei' meaning stone valley. In the Middle Ages, Affligem Abbey initiated limestone extraction, traces of which are still visible today. During the World Wars, the forest suffered deforestation as trees were used for German trenches and fuel. Later replanting efforts introduced American oak and sweet chestnut, now gradually giving way to native species. Today, the Kravaalbos is a protected landscape, offering visitors a chance to explore its varied terrain. Discover an array of plant life, including woodland anemones and wild hyacinths that create a colorful spectacle in spring. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, such as the middle spotted woodpecker and the European honey buzzard, as well as various bat species. Early risers or evening strollers might even spot a roe deer or a red squirrel. The forest offers several walking trails, including four marked loops of varying lengths, allowing visitors to explore both the woodland and the surrounding landscape. The trails can be muddy and difficult to navigate after rain.
