    Discover more about Opera Antwerpen

Opera Antwerpen, located on Frankrijklei, is a prominent cultural landmark in Antwerp, showcasing the city's dedication to the performing arts. The opera house has a rich history dating back to 1661 when the first public opera performances were held in Antwerp. In the late 19th century, Flemish nationalists sought to establish a Flemish opera house as a counterweight to the French-leaning Bourla Theater. The Antwerp city council commissioned city architect Alexis Van Mechelen to design the 'Vlaams Lyrisch Theater,' which would become a symbol of the Flemish movement. Construction began in 1904, and the Vlaamse Opera officially opened on October 17, 1907. The neo-Baroque building, decorated in Louis XVI style, was an immediate success with the public. The interior features a foyer with pink marble columns and a ceiling painting by Emile Vloors. The auditorium, originally seating 1500 but later reduced to 1081, is adorned with stucco and a ceiling painting by Karel Mertens depicting Rythmus, the source of musical creation, surrounded by nine muses. Opera Antwerpen is known for its diverse repertoire of opera, ballet, and concerts, attracting talent from around the world. The opera house closed in 2005 for a two-year renovation to modernize the technology and add a side stage and office building. Today, Opera Antwerpen continues to amaze audiences with both classic and contemporary performances.
