Discover more about Het Steen

Het Steen, a formidable medieval fortress, stands as Antwerp's oldest building, with its origins tracing back to the early Middle Ages. Constructed between 1200 and 1225, it initially served as a gateway to a larger castle belonging to the Dukes of Brabant. The fortress played a crucial role in controlling access to the Scheldt River and defending against Viking incursions. Over the centuries, Het Steen has undergone numerous transformations, functioning as a prison from 1303 to 1827, a royal residence, and even a museum. In the 16th century, under Charles V, the fortress was significantly rebuilt, leading to its current name, which translates to 'The Stone'. Today, after extensive renovations, Het Steen serves as a modern visitor center, offering tourists information, souvenirs, and access to 'The Antwerp Story,' an interactive exhibit detailing the city's history. Visitors can explore the ramparts for panoramic views of the Scheldt River and the city. The fortress also features statues of Lange Wapper, a mythical giant from local folklore, and Semini, a Scandinavian god of youth and fertility. Het Steen provides a captivating glimpse into Antwerp's rich heritage, blending historical significance with contemporary attractions.
