Discover more about Kasteel van Breda

Kasteel van Breda, a majestic castle in the heart of Breda, Netherlands, stands as a testament to the country's rich heritage. With origins as a fortress in the 12th century, the castle evolved into a significant European location from the 15th to 17th centuries due to the international role of the Nassau family. In 1403, Johanna of Polanen married Engelbrecht of Nassau, establishing the castle as the Nassau family's ancestral seat in the Netherlands. Count Hendrik III of Nassau transformed the castle into a Renaissance palace in the 16th century, bringing in Thomas Vincidor de Bologna, a student of Raphael, for the renovations. However, the arrival of the Royal Military Academy in 1826 led to a simplification of the castle, with many Renaissance ornaments disappearing. Today, Kasteel van Breda is home to the Royal Military Academy. While full access may be limited due to its current function, guided tours are available, offering insights into its history and architecture. The castle is part of the Explore Royal Breda route, connecting various locations that highlight Breda's royal roots.
