Discover more about Rubenshuis

The Rubenshuis, located in the heart of Antwerp, was the home and workshop of Peter Paul Rubens from 1610 until his death in 1640. Rubens, a towering figure of the Baroque era, designed the house himself, drawing inspiration from Italian palazzos to create a unique living and working space. Acquired by the city of Antwerp in 1937, the Rubenshuis was carefully restored and opened as a museum in 1946. In 2024, a new visitor experience was launched, with entry via a modern building on Hopland 13, designed by Robbrecht and Daem architects. This new entrance leads visitors to the Rubens Experience, the redesigned Baroque garden, and the library. The museum showcases a selection of Rubens' paintings, drawings, and sculptures, alongside works by his contemporaries. Highlights include his self-portrait, "Adam and Eve", and "Portrait of Isabella Clara Eugenia". The meticulously recreated garden, designed with the advice of fashion designer Dries Van Noten, features 17,500 plants, offering a colorful oasis in the city. The Rubenshuis provides a fascinating insight into the life and work of one of the most influential artists in history. It is a must-see for art lovers and anyone interested in the history of Antwerp.
