Discover more about Le Cheslé

Le Cheslé, located near La Roche-en-Ardenne, is a significant Celtic hillfort dating back to the early Iron Age. This fortified settlement, also known as Tcheslé de Bérismenil, served as a refuge for local populations during the 7th, 6th, and 5th centuries BC. The name 'Cheslé' is believed to originate from ancient words meaning 'castle on rock,' reflecting its strategic placement. The site extends across 13 hectares, featuring a double rampart structure stretching over 1,750 meters. Archaeological excavations since 1960 have revealed insights into the lives of the people who sought shelter here. A reconstruction of the ramparts gives visitors an idea of the ingenuity and defensive capabilities of the ancient inhabitants. The defensive wall measures approximately 6 meters in height and is constructed from earth, schist, and wood. Le Cheslé is perched on a rocky promontory, approximately 80 meters above the River Ourthe. This location provided a natural defense, with steep slopes on the east, south, and west sides. The only accessible entrance was originally on the north side, via a narrow path. Today, the site is accessible via marked trails, offering a scenic half-day walk. According to local folklore, Le Cheslé was once the haunt of elves. Legend has it that a treasure lies hidden in a well at the center of the fortress, guarded by a golden goat, which appears on Christmas Eve. The site is listed as a Patrimoine Majeur de Wallonie, recognizing its historical and archaeological significance.
