Walzin Castle: A Fairytale Fortress Above the Lesse

Walzin Castle, also known as Château de Walzin, is a striking neo-Gothic castle located near Dinant in the Wallonia region of Belgium. Rising from a 50-meter-high cliff above the Lesse River, the castle has origins dating back to the 11th century. Its strategic position made it a valuable defensive site throughout the Middle Ages.Over the centuries, Walzin Castle has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, with each owner leaving their mark on its design. Despite these changes, the castle retains a cohesive and impressive appearance, evoking a sense of fairytale grandeur. In the early 1900s, renovations finalized the look of the castle, showcasing Gothic Revival architecture.Today, Walzin Castle is privately owned by the family of the Duke of Limburg and is not open to the public. However, visitors can still admire the castle's exterior from various viewpoints. Popular activities include hiking the trails in the surrounding area, kayaking on the Lesse River, and picnicking on the meadow across from the castle. The castle's beauty has also made it a favorite subject for artists and photographers, with Victor Hugo creating a drawing of the castle in 1863.
