Discover more about Vianden Castle

Vianden Castle, one of the largest fortified castles west of the Rhine, stands as a cultural and historical monument of European importance. The castle's origins date back to the 4th century as a Roman outpost, with the main structure being built between the 11th and 14th centuries in the Romanesque style. Gothic transformations were added later, and a Renaissance mansion was added in the 17th century. For centuries, Vianden Castle was the seat of the influential Counts of Vianden, who had close ties to the French royal family and the German imperial court. In 1417, the castle passed to the House of Nassau. However, in 1820, King William I of the Netherlands sold the castle piece by piece, leading to its ruin. It wasn't until 1977, when the Grand Ducal family of Luxembourg transferred it to the state, that restoration began. Today, visitors can explore the fully restored castle, including the chapel, the two manors, and the Jülich building. The castle also hosts a modern, interactive visitor center. Vianden Castle is open year-round, with varying hours depending on the season. Standard admission is €13 for adults. The castle is a popular destination, drawing visitors with its rich history, architectural grandeur, and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
