Discover more about Saint-Éloi Belfry of Dunkirk

Rising 58 meters high, the Saint-Éloi Belfry is not only an architectural marvel but also a powerful symbol of Dunkirk's heritage. Constructed in the 14th century, it showcases a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Originally part of the Saint-Éloi Church, the belfry has witnessed centuries of Dunkirk's history, serving as a watchtower, lighthouse, and bell tower. Despite the destruction of the original church in 1558, the belfry remained standing, a silent observer of the city's turbulent past. Over the centuries, it has been integrated into the Church of Saint-Éloi, separated, and then reunited through architectural modifications. Today, visitors can climb the narrow spiral staircase or take the elevator to the observation platform, where they can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Dunkirk and the surrounding landscape. The belfry also houses a carillon, a set of bells that fill the air with enchanting melodies. The current carillon, installed in 1962, features 50 bells, with the largest, Jean Bart, weighing seven tons. The carillon plays different melodies every quarter-hour, adding to the charm of the belfry and the surrounding area. Adjacent to the belfry, a monument commemorates the Dunkirk citizens who perished during World War I, serving as a poignant reminder of the community's sacrifices.
