Leopoldpark: A Green Oasis in Ostend

Escape to Leopoldpark, a serene green oasis in Ostend's heart, featuring beautiful gardens, sculptures, and a historic bandstand.

4.3

Leopoldpark, locally known as 'Den Hof,' is a charming 5-hectare park in the center of Ostend, Belgium, offering a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle. Designed by garden architect Louis Fuchs in the style of an English park, it features winding walkways, flower beds, and bridges. The park's history dates back to 1860 when it was laid out over the old town fortifications. In 1859, two water veins were discovered, leading to the creation of a serene lake that is now home to ducks and swans. A wooden music kiosk, built in 1885 and adorned with wrought-iron railings and floral motifs, hosts regular musical performances. Throughout the park, visitors can admire various statues and sculptures, including the oldest sculpture, a stone lioness with her cub from 1888, resting on the only remaining piece of the city wall. The renowned flower clock, installed in 1933, is another highlight, featuring gold-leaf hands and intricate floral designs that are updated daily. Leopoldpark provides a variety of activities, including a mini-golf course and a playground for children. The park's central location makes it easily accessible and a must-visit destination for tourists seeking relaxation and natural beauty. During the winter months, the park transforms into a magical winter wonderland with Christmas markets and an ice-skating rink.
