Discover more about Dokje Of Perry

The Dokje van Perry, or Perry's Dock, in Vlissingen, stands as a remarkable testament to Dutch maritime history. Constructed between 1704 and 1705, based on a design by Englishman John Perry from 1697, it is the oldest preserved dry dock in the Netherlands and among the oldest in Western Europe. The dock is situated in the Ooster- or Dokhaven, which was first used in 1614 and deepened in the late 17th century to accommodate larger warships. Originally built for the Dutch navy, the dry dock played a crucial role in maintaining and repairing naval vessels. The design allowed ships to enter the dock, after which the water could be pumped out, providing a dry environment for repairs below the waterline. This innovation significantly improved the efficiency of ship maintenance and contributed to Vlissingen's importance as a naval base. Over the centuries, the Dokje van Perry witnessed many changes in naval technology and maritime practices. It continued to serve the Dutch navy until 1961. In 1964, it was recognized as a Rijksmonument (national monument). However, in 1974, the dry dock was filled in with earth, a decision that sparked controversy. Fortunately, in 2010, the dock was excavated and restoration work began. The restored Dokje van Perry was officially reopened in 2013 and is now a tourist attraction.
