Discover more about Sint-Janshuismolen

Located on the Kruisvest, along the edge of Bruges' city center, the Sint-Janshuismolen is a captivating landmark with a rich history. Built in 1770, it is the third mill to occupy this location and is named after the nearby Saint John's Hospital. This charming windmill is the only one in Bruges that still grinds grain and welcomes visitors to explore its inner workings. Windmills have been a part of Bruges' landscape since the construction of the outer city ramparts in the late 13th century, playing a crucial economic role until the 19th century. Today, only four windmills remain on the Kruisvest, with the Sint-Janshuismolen standing out as the only one still grinding flour and open to the public. A visit offers a unique opportunity to witness traditional milling techniques and learn about their significance in Bruges' agricultural heritage. Visitors can climb the steep stairs of the Sint-Janshuismolen for a breathtaking view of Bruges' green ramparts. If the wind is favorable, you might even witness the mill's mechanism in action. The mill underwent a thorough restoration in 2001 in preparation for Bruges' designation as the European Capital of Culture in 2002. Today, it is part of the Musea Brugge network.
