Discover more about Red Cloister

Nestled in the serene Auderghem area of Brussels, the Red Cloister, known as Rouge-Cloître in French and Roodklooster in Dutch, presents a picturesque escape that combines art, nature, and history. This former Augustinian priory, founded in 1367, offers visitors a unique experience, blending contemporary art exhibitions with tranquil natural surroundings. Originally named the Red Hermitage, the site's name may derive from the red clay used to coat the original hermitage walls or from the Dutch word 'Rooien,' meaning cutting trees. Over the centuries, the Red Cloister has evolved from a place of religious devotion to a cultural hub. The priory was abolished in 1796 and is now administered by the municipality of Auderghem. Today, visitors can explore the art center, which hosts diverse exhibitions showcasing Belgian and international artists, often focusing on the interplay between text and image. The site also features beautiful gardens, walking paths, and access to the Sonian Forest, inviting leisurely strolls and invigorating hikes. The blend of art and nature creates a vibrant atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and inspiration. The Red Cloister's historical buildings reflect the area's rich heritage, offering a glimpse into the past. The site also provides a café where visitors can relax and enjoy local delicacies while soaking in the scenery. The Red Cloister is committed to preserving its natural environment and cultural significance, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking tranquility, art, and nature.
