Overview

Hendrik Conscienceplein, formerly known as Jesuit Square, has been named after the 19th-century Flemish writer Hendrik Conscience since 1883. A statue of Conscience, created by Frans Joris, stands proudly in the square. The buildings surrounding the square showcase a stunning baroque style, a deliberate choice by the Jesuits during the Counter-Reformation to draw people to the church. The square is home to the Erfgoedbibliotheek Hendrik Conscience (Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library), housed in the former Sodaliteit building since 1883. The library's history dates back to 1481, and today it holds over 1.5 million volumes, considered Flemish cultural heritage. The Nottebohm Room within the library is a highlight, though it's typically only open to the public during guided tours. In 1972, Hendrik Conscienceplein became Antwerp's first car-free square, the result of an initiative by local residents and artists. The square's design features a chessboard pattern of white squares, with each square laid according to the paver's own design. In the center, the designer added card suit symbols. Today, the square remains a vibrant hub, hosting events and offering a place to relax and soak in Antwerp's atmosphere.
