The Mary Magdalene Chapel, situated in the heart of Brussels, is a historically significant religious structure with origins tracing back to the 13th century. Founded by the Brothers of Mercy, the chapel has undergone several renovations and restorations throughout its existence. Excavations during the restoration in the 1950s revealed sub-foundation walls, suggesting an even older sanctuary may have been built by the Knights Templar.The chapel's architecture showcases a blend of Gothic and Baroque styles. The exterior features 13th-century red brickwork, while the interior boasts a grey stone nave and Gothic arches surrounding the altar. The façade incorporates a Baroque portal dating back to 1637, adorned with representations of Christ, Mary Magdalene, and angels. Stained glass windows add a kaleidoscope of colors to the interior.Despite facing potential demolition after World War II, the chapel was rescued and restored in 1957, with the addition of the façade from the old Saint Anne chapel in the Brabant Baroque style.
