Discover more about Opera Antwerpen

Opera Antwerpen, also known as the Vlaamse Opera, is a majestic opera house located on the Frankrijklei in Antwerp, Belgium. This architectural gem, designed in the Neo-Baroque style with Beaux-Arts elements, has been a cultural cornerstone of the city since its inauguration in 1907. The opera house's history dates back to 1661 when the first public opera performances in Antwerp were held. In the late 19th century, Flemish nationalists sought to establish a Flemish opera house as a counterweight to the Francophone Bourla Theater. The Antwerp city council commissioned city architect Alexis Van Mechelen to design the 'Vlaams Lyrisch Theater,' which would become a symbol of the Flemish movement. The interior of the Opera Antwerpen is as breathtaking as its facade. The foyer features large pink marble columns and a ceiling adorned with a painting by Emile Vloors, created between 1909 and 1914, depicting a poet with Pegasuses. The auditorium, originally seating 1500 but later reduced to 1081, is decorated with stucco and a ceiling painting by Karel Mertens called 'De Rythmus,' which represents the source of all musical creations accompanied by the nine muses. Today, Opera Antwerpen continues to host a diverse range of performances, including opera, ballet, and concerts, attracting some of the finest talents from around the world. It is home to the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, the largest cultural stage in Flanders.
