Koningsplein, also known as Place Royale, is a historic neoclassical square in Brussels, Belgium, that has charmed visitors since 1848. The square is modeled after French royal squares and was constructed between 1775 and 1782, based on a plan by architects Jean-Benoît-Vincent Barré and Gilles-Barnabé Guimard, replacing the former Palace of Coudenberg. It was part of an urban project that included Brussels Park. The square's focal point is the equestrian statue of Godfrey of Bouillon, a key figure in the First Crusade. Created by sculptor Eugène Simonis in 1848, the statue symbolizes Belgium's medieval heritage. Godfrey of Bouillon was a leader in the First Crusade (1096–1099) and became known as the protector of the Holy Sepulchre. The statue stands near the neoclassical facade of the Church of Saint Jacques-sur-Coudenberg. Two reliefs at the base depict King Godfrey in council and the capture of Jerusalem. Koningsplein is surrounded by notable landmarks, including the Royal Palace, Brussels Park, the BELvue Museum, and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts. The square is a vibrant hub where locals and tourists gather to enjoy the ambiance, especially on sunny days when outdoor cafés come alive.
