Emperor Joseph II of Austria abolished cemeteries inside the city walls during the Austrian occupation, leading to its conversion into a public square.In the 19th century, Groenplaats underwent a significant renovation, embracing the neoclassical style. Elegant buildings were constructed around the square, and a central fountain was added. Since 1843, a bronze statue of Pieter Paul Rubens, Antwerp's most famous painter, has graced the center of Groenplaats.
