Petit Sablon Square: A Tranquil Oasis in Brussels

Nestled in the heart of Brussels, the Place du Petit Sablon offers a tranquil retreat from the vibrant city life. This small, rectangular square was transformed into a public garden in 1890 by architect Henri Beyaert, having previously served as a horse market. The square is dedicated to the memory of Counts Egmont and Hornes, who were executed for their resistance to the Spanish invasion. The garden is enclosed by an elaborate wrought-iron fence adorned with 48 bronze statuettes, each representing a medieval guild. These detailed figures offer a glimpse into the historical trades of Brussels, such as stone-cutters and linen croppers. Inside the square, ten slightly larger statues honor significant figures from Belgium's 16th century. These include Mercator, the famous cartographer, William the Silent, and painter Bernard van Orley. At the center of the square stands a striking fountain, topped with statues of Counts Egmont and Hoorn. The monument, created by Ch. A Fraikin, was initially erected on the Grand-Place before being moved to Petit Sablon. The surrounding neoclassical buildings and the nearby Church of Our Blessed Lady of the Sablon enhance the square's charm with their impressive Gothic architecture.
