Discover more about De Zegge

De Zegge, located in Geel, Belgium, is a 120-hectare nature reserve recognized as one of the oldest in Flanders. This vulnerable paradise is home to rare species and a unique marsh habitat with peatlands. The bog plays a vital role in retaining carbon, serving as a beacon against global warming. De Zegge faces threats due to water balance issues, prompting the Antwerp Zoo Foundation (AZF) to combat desiccation and create a safe habitat for animals like the Eurasian bittern, brown harrier, and grass snake. The AZF collaborates with local authorities and residents to balance fauna, flora, and economics for a sustainable future. The Molen van 't Veld, a historic windmill, marks the start of scenic routes along Mosselgoren and Neerhelst, though access is limited to protect the vulnerable ecosystem.
