Discover more about Pont de fer

The Pont de Fer, or Iron Bridge, is a prominent landmark in Huy, Belgium, with a rich history intertwined with the region's industrial and military past. The first bridge on this site was constructed between 1865 and 1872 as part of the Hesbaye-Condroz railway line, connecting Landen and Ciney. This original bridge was a metal lattice structure that allowed pedestrian passage on its downstream side. In 1914, during World War I, Belgian civilians destroyed the bridge to impede the advance of enemy troops. The current bridge, built in 1924, is constructed from stone sourced from the Sprimont quarries, featuring graceful arches. Despite being targeted by Allied bombing in 1944, it sustained only partial damage. Today, the Pont de Fer serves as a pedestrian bridge, offering stunning views of the Meuse River and the cityscape of Huy. Although rail activity is limited, the bridge remains a testament to Huy's architectural and historical significance.
