Castle Loppem: A Neo-Gothic Gem

Castle Loppem, nestled in the serene municipality of Zedelgem near Bruges, stands as a remarkable testament to Neo-Gothic architecture and a window into 19th-century aristocratic life. Constructed between 1859 and 1862 for Baron Charles van Caloen and his wife, Countess Savina de Gourcy Serainchamps, the castle showcases a harmonious blend of architectural design and interior decor. The noble couple, deeply religious, saw Neo-Gothic as the only true Christian art. The exterior presents an opulent facade adorned with towers, bay windows, pointed and round arches, and a coat of arms above the entrance. Inside, visitors are greeted by impressive murals depicting historical scenes, saints, and cardinal virtues. The interior is further enhanced by artisanal furniture, upholstery, glassware, paintings, tapestries, and intricate wood carvings. The house chapel features magnificent stained-glass windows. Beyond its architectural and artistic merits, Castle Loppem holds historical significance. In late 1918, it served as the headquarters of the Belgian army and the residence of King Albert I and Queen Elizabeth. Political meetings known as the Loppem Agreements were held here. British King George V and French President Raymond Poincaré also stayed at the castle in 1918. The surrounding English-style park, designed by Jean Gindra, features ancient trees, ponds, and grottos. A highlight is the vast maze, created in 1873 by the children of Charles van Caloen, offering a delightful and immersive experience. Visitors can stroll along winding paths, discovering picturesque views of the castle and the surrounding landscape. Today, the Jean van Caloen Foundation ensures the upkeep of the property, welcoming visitors to explore the castle and its surroundings.
