Discover more about Duinbossen

The Duinbossen of De Haan, a green gem on the Belgian coast, spans 152 hectares and consists of three parts: the Duinbossen of Klemskerke, Vlissegem, and Wenduine. These areas connect with the nature reserves of De Zandpanne and De Kijkuit, creating a large and varied dune landscape. The area is characterized by open dune landscapes, vast wooded dunes, and diverse flora and fauna. Formed after the 11th century, the dunes were planted with elm trees in the late 18th and early 19th centuries to prevent the fertile agricultural land from disappearing under the drifting sand. The first actual tree plantings occurred in 1838, mainly Scots pine and hardwood trees. Today, the Agency for Nature and Forests aims to create a more natural forest with a rich structure and many open spaces. The Duinbossen offers various activities, including walking, running, cycling, and mountain biking. There are three play zones for children and a 13-kilometer riding track. The area is also home to unique species like the red wood ant, which can live in mounds housing up to 700,000 ants. Visitors can explore marked trails, enjoy the Spioenkop viewpoint, and discover the diverse plant and animal life.
