The Statue of Jan van Eyck is a prominent landmark in Bruges, located in the Jan van Eyckplein. This square is named in honor of Jan van Eyck, one of the most influential artists of the Early Renaissance, also referred to as the Northern Renaissance. Van Eyck, though not a native of Bruges, spent a significant portion of his life in the city, and his contributions to art are celebrated worldwide.The statue itself is a monumental tribute to Van Eyck, recognized for his innovative techniques in oil painting and his meticulous attention to detail. Designed by local artist H. Pickery, the statue was erected in 1878, replacing a smaller version from 1820 that was deemed inadequate. King Leopold II of Belgium attended the inauguration of the new statue. The bronze sculpture stands at an impressive 3.75 meters and weighs approximately 1,700 kilograms.Jan van Eyckplein, where the statue is located, has a rich history of its own. During the Middle Ages, it functioned as a lively port, the heart of Bruges' mercantile activity. Today, the square provides a tranquil setting where visitors can appreciate the surrounding architecture, enjoy a meal at one of the cafes, or simply soak in the atmosphere of this historic city.
