Discover more about Escalier menant au ruines de Crèvecoeur

The Escalier menant au ruines de Crèvecoeur, or Stairway to the Crèvecoeur Ruins, provides access to a historic castle overlooking Dinant and the Meuse River valley. The Crèvecoeur Castle, dating back to 1320, was modified throughout the 14th and 15th centuries. The fortress played a role in defending nearby towns. It was partially destroyed in 1554 during a siege by Henri II and ultimately dismantled in 1672. Legend has it that during the siege of Henri II, three officers' wives or fiancées took command of the tower to encourage the defending troops. Preferring death to capture, they leapt from the tower together. This tragic scene is said to have broken the hearts of those who witnessed it, giving the castle its name, Crèvecoeur, meaning "broken heart". Today, the Crèvecoeur Ruins have been restored and secured, offering visitors a pleasant walk and stunning views. Visitors can explore the remains of the castle and enjoy the panoramic scenery of the Meuse Valley.
