Belgium Pier: A Seaside Icon

The Belgium Pier, or Pier van Blankenberge, is an iconic landmark in the coastal town of Blankenberge, Belgium. Stretching 350 meters into the North Sea, this concrete structure offers visitors a unique blend of history, entertainment, and breathtaking oceanic views. The pier's history dates back to 1873, with the first design proposed by John Hendrey. The first pier, made of cast iron in an Art Nouveau style, was completed in 1894 but was destroyed by German forces in 1914 during World War I. The current pier, designed by Jules Soete in Art Deco style, was inaugurated on July 9, 1933. It quickly became a symbol of modernity and hope. A renovation occurred between 1999 and 2003 after concrete cancer was diagnosed. The walkway was restored to its original 1933 design in 2023. The pier features a brasserie, rooftop bar (open in the summer), and event spaces. The brasserie serves dishes prepared with fresh ingredients, while the rooftop bar offers views of the North Sea. The pier hosts events throughout the year, including Valentine's Day celebrations and New Year's Eve parties.
