Jeanneke Pis: Brussels' Playful Little Sister

Discover Jeanneke Pis, the quirky and charming little sister of Manneken Pis, a symbol of gender equality in the heart of Brussels.

3.9

Tucked away in the Impasse de la Fidélité/Getrouwheidsgang (Fidelity Alley), just a stone's throw from the bustling Rue des Bouchers and Grand Place, lies Jeanneke Pis. This modern fountain sculpture, created by Denis-Adrien Debouvrie, offers a playful and egalitarian counterpoint to Brussels' iconic Manneken Pis. Commissioned in 1985 and erected in 1987, the 50-centimetre bronze statue portrays a naked little girl with pigtails, squatting and urinating on a blue-grey limestone base. Unlike its male counterpart, Jeanneke Pis is protected by wrought iron bars, a measure taken to prevent vandalism. Jeanneke Pis embodies the city's progressive values and cultural inclusivity. The statue has become a symbol of female empowerment and equality, challenging traditional gender norms. Legend says that throwing a coin into the fountain's basin will grant your wish for enduring fidelity. Visiting Jeanneke Pis offers a unique and memorable experience. The statue is accessible 24/7 and free to visit. The alley is also home to various establishments, including the famous Delirium Café, known for its extensive beer menu.
