The Musée Liégeois du Luminaire (MULUM), nestled at the foot of the Citadel in Liège, offers a captivating exploration of the history of lighting. Opened in October 2012, the museum traces the evolution of lighting devices from prehistoric times to the 21st century. The museum's collection includes over 1300 lamps, lanterns, sconces, and chandeliers, illustrating the diverse methods of illumination throughout history. Many of the exhibits are operational, allowing visitors to witness the progression of lighting technologies firsthand. The museum owes its existence to Philippe Deitz, who began collecting antique lighting at age 15 and donated part of his collection to the city of Liège. This donation formed the foundation of the museum. Visitors can explore the magic of light through the ages, from the earliest Roman oil lamps to energy-efficient LED bulbs. The museum not only displays lighting fixtures but also explains the techniques and applications behind them. MULUM regularly hosts exhibitions that highlight different aspects of its collection, and guided tours are available.
