Constructed in the early 18th century, this fortress-island was designed by Menno van Coehoorn as part of the city's defenses. It is the only remaining 'ravelijn' designed by Coehoorn. The fortress played a crucial role in safeguarding the city from invasions and controlling access from the south to Holland and Zeeland.The island is surrounded by a wide moat and earthen walls, featuring viewing and firing slits, as well as cannon cellars. In the late 19th century, the fortress lost its defensive function and is now used for public and private events. Visitors can explore the island's architecture, learn about its history, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. A pedestrian bridge connects the fortress to the city center.Guided tours are available, offering insights into the fortress's history, construction, and function within the Zuiderwaterlinie.
