Discover more about Opera Antwerpen

Opera Antwerpen is more than just a performance venue; it's a historical and architectural gem that embodies Antwerp's rich cultural heritage. Constructed between 1904 and 1907, the opera house was designed by architects Alexis Van Mechelen and Emiel Van Averbeke as a symbol of the Flemish movement, offering a counterweight to the French-leaning Bourla Theatre. The building's Neo-Baroque style, adorned with Louis XVI decorations, immediately captivated the public. The interior is just as impressive, featuring a pink marble oval foyer with paintings by Emile Vloors. The main hall, with its amphitheater shape, can accommodate over 1,000 spectators and showcases a ceiling painting by Karel Mertens, representing rhythm through a male figure surrounded by muses. Throughout its history, Opera Antwerpen has been a stage for world-class opera, ballet, and concert performances. In 2014, the Royal Ballet of Flanders and the Flemish Opera merged to become the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. The opera house closed for renovations in 2004 and reopened three years later with modernized technology and improved facilities. Today, Opera Antwerpen continues to amaze audiences with both classic and contemporary productions.
