Discover more about cave of Lorette-Rochefort

The Grotte de Lorette-Rochefort, often called the 'little sister' of the more famous Caves of Han, offers a unique and fascinating subterranean experience. Located just 300 meters from the center of Rochefort, this cave system invites visitors to descend into the depths of the Earth and discover its hidden wonders. The adventure begins with a visit to the reception area, where you can view 'Vidéokarst,' a film that explains the tectonic phenomena that created the cave and introduces the Val d'Enfer research laboratory. Then, prepare for a descent of approximately 60 meters through a maze of galleries and chambers adorned with stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and other unique formations. One of the highlights of the tour is the 'Salle du Sabbat' (Sabbath Chamber), a vast cavern where a small hot air balloon is released to demonstrate the immense height of the cave, accompanied by a captivating sound and light show. The tour also includes a visit to 'Le Cataclysme' (The Cataclysm), a more recently opened section of the cave. The Grotte de Lorette's history dates back to 1865 when it was discovered by Alphonse Collignon and opened to the public in 1870. During the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, the cave served as a shelter for local residents seeking refuge from the fighting. Note that the cave is not accessible to people with reduced mobility due to the presence of more than 600 steps.
