    Discover more about Poilvache Castle

Poilvache Castle, also known as Château de Poilvache, is a captivating medieval site located in the Walloon municipality of Yvoir, Belgium. The castle ruins stand majestically on a clifftop, overlooking the village of Houx and the Meuse River. This strategic location allowed the castle to control the surrounding area and served as a vital defensive point throughout its history. The castle's origins trace back to the 10th century when it was known as Château d'Émeraude (Emerald Castle). The site was strengthened over time, becoming one of the largest fortifications in the Meuse valley. Poilvache was not the property of an independent lord, but the fortress of the provostship of Poilvache - that is to say a medieval military, judicial and administrative centre. Throughout the 13th and 15th centuries, the castle played a significant role in regional conflicts, enduring several sieges. In 1430, the castle was destroyed by the militia of the Prince-Bishop of Liège. Although the castle was destroyed, the provostship survived as an administrative entity throughout the Burgundian, Spanish, and Austrian periods, until the French Revolution. Today, visitors can explore the extensive ruins, including the remnants of walls, towers, and a well. The site offers panoramic views of the Meuse River and the surrounding countryside. The diverse flora and fauna add to the site's appeal. The castle is open weekends and holidays from April to the end of October, and daily during school vacations in Wallonia.
