Discover more about Kruiswegpark

Kruiswegpark, located in Roermond, is a unique park that combines religious significance, historical artistry, and natural beauty. Created in 1920, the park was designed by architect Dr. Pierre Cuypers and features a harmonious integration of a Stations of the Cross route, a separate procession path with paintings of the Virgin Mary, and a central square at the foot of Calvary Hill. The park's design includes winding paths, old trees (some over 85 years old), diverse wildlife, and the Stations of the Cross, making it a cultural and spiritual landmark. The park has religious ties to the nearby Kapel in 't Zand, a pilgrimage site. The Redemptorist fathers established Kruiswegpark to accommodate the thousands of pilgrims who came to venerate Mary. The park provides a place for contemplation and devotion, as well as outdoor Eucharistic celebrations during the summer. The park's fourteen Stations of the Cross are architecturally, culturally, and artistically significant. Thirteen stations were sculpted in French limestone by Roermond artist Karel Lücker, while Jean Geelen created the sculptures for Calvary Hill. Each sculpture group incorporates a relief in perspective with coats of arms referring to the places or families who funded the station. The park also features a flower carpet made by volunteers each year, with a different theme. Kruiswegpark is a nationally recognized monument and a green oasis in the heart of the neighborhood.
