4

The Rattentoren, a remnant of Roermond's old city walls, stands proudly on Grote Kerkstraat, near the Sint-Christoffelkathedraal. Constructed in the late 14th century, this round corner tower was one of twenty that once formed Roermond's defensive perimeter. Over the centuries, it has witnessed pivotal moments in history, including the Eighty Years' War, the Spanish Succession War, the French Revolution, and World War II. Initially known as the Klokkentoren (Bell Tower) or Goudentoren (Golden Tower), it took on a darker role in the early 17th century when it was used as a prison for women accused of witchcraft, earning it the name Heksentoren (Witches' Tower). Later, in the 18th century, the dilapidated tower and its surroundings became a refuse site, leading to its current moniker, Rattentoren. The tower's spire was destroyed during the city fire of 1554. The municipality of Roermond, recognizing its historical value, restored the Rattentoren in 1976, adding a new spire. Further renovations in the 1990s allowed for the opening of upper floors to the public. Today, visitors can explore an exhibit on the first floor featuring a scale model of Roermond as a medieval fortified city. The tower is open to visitors during the weekends in July, August and September.
