Discover more about Vrijthof

Vrijthof, the largest square in Maastricht, has a rich history dating back to Roman times when it served as a cemetery. Over the centuries, it transformed into a central gathering place and a vital religious center, largely due to its proximity to the Basilica of Saint Servatius. The square is framed by iconic structures such as the Basilica of Saint Servatius, St. John's Church with its distinctive red tower, and the Theater aan het Vrijthof. These buildings reflect Maastricht's architectural and cultural heritage, creating a stunning backdrop. Vrijthof is known for hosting various events, including the TEFAF Art Fair and the summer concerts by André Rieu. The square also features many cafes and restaurants, making it a popular spot for both tourists and locals. During the French Occupation (1794–1814), Vrijthof was renamed Place des Armes. A large parking garage was constructed from 1969 to 1972.
