Discover more about Theater aan het Vrijthof

Theater aan het Vrijthof, situated on the iconic Vrijthof square in Maastricht, is a cultural cornerstone of the city. Officially opened in 1992, the theater occupies the General's House, an elegant structure dating back to the early 19th century, and a modern extension designed by architect Arno Meijs. This blend of historical and contemporary architecture creates a unique and inviting atmosphere for visitors. The theater's history is rich and varied. The General's House was built on the foundations of the former White Women's Convent, and traces of a palace dating back to 800-1000 AD can even be seen in the basement. Before becoming a theater, the building served as a general's residence, a police station, a city library, and a museum. The Theater aan het Vrijthof boasts two halls: the Papyrus Hall, which can accommodate up to 915 spectators, and the smaller Bovenzaal, located in the historic General's House, with a capacity of 110. The Papyrus Hall is the main performance space, hosting a diverse program of opera, musicals, classical and world music, jazz, ballet, modern dance, theater, and cabaret. As an A-theater, it balances artistic productions with popular shows, ensuring there's something for everyone. The theater is home to the South Netherlands Philharmonic and Opera Zuid, and also hosts performances by Toneelgroep Maastricht. Throughout the theater season, several festivals take place, including Musica Sacra and the Dutch Dance Days. The Theater aan het Vrijthof replaced the Bonbonnière and Staarzaal as Maastricht's primary venue for performing arts.
