Discover more about Het Arsenaal

Het Arsenaal, located in the historic port city of Vlissingen, was a unique attraction that combined the thrill of a theme park with the educational aspects of a museum and aquarium. Until its closure in September 2021, visitors could explore a world of pirates, marine life, and maritime history. The Arsenaal's story began in 1823 when it was built as an artillery warehouse on the foundations of an unfinished military hospital planned by Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1980, the Ministry of Defense relinquished the building to the city of Vlissingen, who sought to transform it into a tourism hub. It opened as a maritime attraction in 1993. Over the years, Het Arsenaal featured a pirate park, a sea aquarium with sharks and rays, and a 65-meter-high observation tower offering panoramic views of Vlissingen and the Westerschelde. The complex also included a theater, restaurants and gaming halls. While it is no longer open, Het Arsenaal remains a significant landmark in Vlissingen, a testament to the city's rich maritime past and its enduring appeal as a tourist destination.
