Some view the statue as a feminist statement, challenging traditional gender norms.Jeanneke Pis was commissioned to revitalize interest in the Ilot Sacré area and to metaphorically restore equality between men and women. A plaque near the statue describes a custom where coins thrown into the fountain grant the thrower's wish for loyalty. The money collected is donated to medical research and to help those in need in Belgium.
