Havré Castle, a captivating historical site just outside Mons, Belgium, invites visitors to step back in time and explore its storied past. The castle's origins trace back to 1226, with evidence suggesting control by the Counts of Flanders and Hainaut even earlier, in the 11th century. Throughout the centuries, the castle has been enlarged and transformed by its owners, including the Enghien and Croÿ families. Originally a feudal fortress, Havré Castle served as an important defensive position. It faced sieges and destruction, notably in 1578 when besieged by Don Juan's forces and again in 1579 when a fire devastated the structure. However, it was rebuilt and restored, particularly in the 17th century by Charles Alexander de Croÿ, becoming a magnificent residence that welcomed royalty and renowned artists. Celebrated figures such as Rubens, Van Dyck, Marie of Hungary, and Marie de Medici graced its halls. After the French Revolution, the castle fell into decline and was abandoned in 1839. Fortunately, in 1978, the association "Les Amis du Château des Ducs d'Havré" (Friends of the Castle of the Dukes of Havré) stepped in to save it from ruin. Today, the association continues its work to preserve and promote the castle, which has been classified as a heritage site since 1936. Visitors can explore the castle's grounds, admire its architecture, and discover its rich history through guided tours and exhibitions. The surrounding gardens, including the Jardin des Sens and an English-style garden, provide a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls.
