Discover more about Art Museum Z33

Z33, located in Hasselt, Belgium, stands as a unique institution that transcends the traditional museum concept. It positions itself as a dynamic hub where contemporary art, innovative design, and thought-provoking architecture converge to address pressing social themes. Unlike conventional museums, Z33 does not maintain a permanent collection; instead, it focuses on initiating, producing, and displaying temporary exhibitions that encourage visitors to think critically about the world around them. The institution's location itself is steeped in history. Z33 is situated on the site of a former beguinage, a community of lay religious women dating back to the 13th century. The current building is an architectural marvel, seamlessly blending the historic Vleugel 58 with the futuristic Vleugel 19, designed by Italian architect Francesca Torzo. The diamond-shaped brick exterior of Vleugel 19 pays homage to the surrounding historical urban fabric, creating a harmonious dialogue between the past and the present. Z33's exhibitions are known for their boldness and their ability to spark conversations about cultural, scientific, and social processes. The institution also extends its reach beyond its walls through art projects in public spaces, aiming to make stories embedded in the landscape visible through artworks that connect with their surroundings. Z33 also provides a platform for emerging artists and designers, fostering talent development through projects like FORMAT. Visiting Z33 is an immersive experience that encourages engagement with contemporary ideas and artistic expressions. The museum also houses a café where visitors can relax and reflect on their experience.
